Experiences

Experiences to suit the adventurous and the less adventurous.

Experiences overview

The nearby Panorama Route boasts 1800s gold rush history and a scenic drive from waterfalls to the third largest canyon in the world, the Blyde River Canyon. But you don’t really need to leave the lodge: spot a springbok bouncing by during a game drive or quench your thirst for knowledge during a guided bush walk – did you know we have 28 species of interesting mammals? Zip line or rock climb with colleagues and friends at our GearOn adventure facility, or visit our Sable Breeding Project.

(For the less adventurous, get pampered at our Nyala Spa after fully indulging in a buffet breakfast fit for a king. The comfortably classy restaurant and bar flaunts elevated views over the bushveld, making it easy to spot giraffe in the distance. Besides a games room and a gym, we also have a pool situated in the manicured gardens – an oasis for the warmer summer’s days.)

Day trips

Nestled close to the border of two provinces, Hannah Game Lodge offers quick access to Mpumalanga, the place where the sun rises, and Limpopo meaning strong gushing waterfalls. The nearby Panorama Route boasts just that: a scenic drive from waterfalls to the third largest canyon in the world, The Blyde River Canyon, strewn with 1800s gold rush history along the way. Explore some of the nearest natural attractions like the Echo Caves (a 36km drive), or travel 60km to the Three Rondavels in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve; three round mountains, each with a pointy “roof” resembling the traditional African homestead.

Luxury facilities & services

Our comfortably classy restaurant and bar flaunts elevated views over the bushveld, making it easy to spot giraffe far in the distance. Besides a games room and a gym, we also have a pool situated in the manicured gardens – an oasis for those warmer summer’s days. Satellite television, internet access, laundry services and airport transfers; we have it all.

Game drives & bush walks

Spend your mornings or afternoons exposed to the African bush, exploring the private reserve on foot or in an open game drive vehicle.
In 1 – 2 hours you can learn more about the vegetation, our 28 species of mammals, 250 plus bird species, the geology of the area and the culture of the local people; all thanks to our trained, registered and friendly field guides and rangers. If you’re lucky, the elusive leopard will make an appearance; but the buffalo and giraffe might be easier to spot. Some of our antelope to look out for are tsessebe, gemsbuck, mountain reedbuck, eland, sable and springbok.

Sable Breeding Project

Our guests are more than welcome to visit The Sable Breeding Project during morning or afternoon game drives. The project started in 1992 with a small herd of sable free roaming on the farm when it was purchased.
By 2004 there were 50 free roaming sable, but unfortunately due to Thieleriosus (a tick-borne disease) 22 of our females died. Our sable were fragile enough to contract the disease due to direct grazing competition with other antelope: sable aren’t competitive feeders and often leave areas due to competition for food, which consequently leaves them weak.
Around 2007, Hannah Game Lodge incorporated the sable breeding camps to control the tick problem; spraying the animals with Deadline dip (according to their weight), which sterilizes female ticks.
In 2011, eight females and one male sable were selected to remain in the breeding project, while selling the older females and their offspring. Thanks to a more scientific approach with DNA tests, we also managed to determine the origin of our herds, which are Zambian sable.
One of the young bulls roaming outside the breeding camp boasted the right genetics to be a main breeding bull. Due to his wide spread horns, he was named Harley and moved to the camp in 2013.
With a detailed register containing the animals’ pictures and info; and thanks to passionate staff responsible for the daily running of the venture, Hannah Game Lodge plans to intensify The Sable Breeding Project in the future.
